Our course includes all aspects of modern Communications Design

Through the design of advertisements, brochures, posters and interactive websites, our students learn all the various stages of Communications Design: concept, idea, design and layout through to production in print and digital media.

From digital photography studios to digital film editing, all the multimedia tools are available. Our high performance servers provide easy-to-access reference material and other digital tools which support students’ design projects.

Through our contacts with professional design studios and clients in both the business and cultural environment of Berlin and Germany, we are often able to integrate real projects and design competitions into the course.

Placement opportunites and job offers from design companies and other employers are regularly featured within our Intranet. Our practice-orientated course gives our students an extra advantage when applying for placements and employment in the design industry.

The course

The Graphic Design course that the BTK Academy of Design offers is divided into 6 semester and lasts 3 years.

The course is almost entirely taught in German and so a reasonably good understanding of German is necessary for an effective and sucessful participation.

The semesters commence at the beginning of April and October each year. The first three semesters give an excellent foundation in many areas of art and design, including illustration, layout, desktop publishing, typography and so on.

During the 4th and 5th Semesters, students chose the components of their course individually from a number of options, including Advertising Design, Editorial Design and Multimedi. For example, the Multimedia options include Web-Animation, Web-Pubishing, Film and Video, Motion Design, Multimedia Concept and Design.

The success of the course is of course dependant not only on the BTK but also to a greater extent on the students themselves. Modern Communications Design includes so many areas and demands of designers so many skills and experiences. The basic requirements this professional has of each student include not only a good work discipline and motivation, but also a high level of individual creativity and, above all, a passion for Graphic Design.

The examinations

At the end of the 3rd Semester, students take an Intermediate Examination, which involves the design and presentation of a Communications Design project.

During the 5th Semester, students are required to present their portfollio of projects and assignments completed at the BTK Academy of Design to date.

At the end of the 6th Semester, each student must present a final design project and a portfolio of the projects completed during the course to an examination board. The examination board is comprised of independent, external design professionals (Creative Directors from the leading advertising agencies in Germany), and BTK Academy of Design course lecturers.

On successful completion of this course, the students receive a Diploma in Communications Design from the BTK Academy of Design, which confirms the gradings for both the final project. the portfolio and their coursework and Intermediate Examination respectively.
